Is running Google Ads worth it? How much do I charge?

How much do Google Ads Cost? It’s a good question but the answer, well that depends.

The pricing of Google Adwords campaign management often depends on the client and their specific goals.

Different businesses also have a different amount of resources to dedicate to Google Ads management

There simply isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to the cost of your Ads.

Even the best freelancer can’t promise you results, since there are a lot of factors that are outside of my control (competition, quality of your website, etc.)

But, don’t despair though there are tools and methods for estimating the costs of Ads for your campaign and we are going to discuss that today.

The cost of your Google Ads depends on a number of variables:

  • How much are you willing to spend? i.e. your daily budget.
  • The average price for clicks in your specific industry and location.
  • The specific keywords you want to target. i.e capital city versus suburb.
  • The price your competitors are willing to pay.
  • The quality score of your keywords, campaign and account.
  • Lifetime customer value or service lead value.

Remember that Google Ads is an auction system and therefore it’s a constant battle between price and demand. If the demand or competition rises for a specific keyword then so will the price. Every business and industry has a unique level of competition that will greatly determine the price you’ll pay per click (PPC).

So, How much do I charge?

For most clients, I will need to establish a fixed-term contract of 3 to 12 months — not a month-to-month agreement.

PPC is more time-consuming than you think

I always recommend Google Ads; it’s a great entry point for small businesses because from the moment it’s switched on, you have the potential to start generating more leads and sales. It doesn’t suffer from the same latency that SEO does and can become profitable very quickly.

But that doesn’t mean that Google Ads is an overnight solution for your business – the performance will improve significantly the longer your campaign runs.

For a profitable Google Ads campaign, you might need to:

  • deploy dynamic landing pages that change the copy depending on the search term
  • conduct ad or landing page split testing
  • profile your website visitors and serve different banner adverts for different customer needs
  • create or design a high-converting website or landing page
  • research your target customer and create an appealing offer
  • configure and troubleshoot a Google shopping feed for over 9000+ products
  • create suburb groups for every suburb in a region

All of the above can take a significant chunk of time, just a high-converting landing page alone could be anywhere from 15 – 20 hours of work, and I’m not talking about cookie-cutter templates either.

The work can be significant when you combine several of the above strategies.

you need to invest an appropriate amount relevant to your ad spend, your goals, the level of experience you choose to work with and the amount of work required to get results. If you have a shopping campaign, need re-marketing, want banner adverts or need a new landing page, then you can expect to pay a lot more.

To maximise your return potential, you need to employ a quality PPC professional, someone who has proven experience getting real results for real businesses and can show that to you.

Things You Can Control With Google Ads

  • The maximum cost-per-click you are willing to spend to get a visitor to your website
  • When or where your advert appears (search, display, keywords etc)
  • Which format your ad appears in (text, banner, video, shopping listing, etc.) and its content
  • Which page of your website the advert will take people towards (the landing page)
  • The cost of your products or services on the website (the perceived cost depending on the quality and/or service)
  • How the website works, looks and interacts with the visitors (how the website converts)
  • The maximum daily spend you want to spend.

Things You Cannot Control With Google Ads

  • The competition’s maximum cost-per-click amounts (this information is also hidden)
  • The competition’s ad content
  • The competition’s price for similar products or services
  • The conversion rate of the competitor’s website
  • The number of times your advert will appear for certain searches or topics (display or keyword traffic)

Final Tips on CPC

  • Google Ads is based on an auction system that will reward you for high-quality ad campaigns with lower costs and better ad placement.
  • You should aim for tight control over how your Google Ads budget is spent using ad scheduling, match types, negative keywords, device targeting and more.
  • The search network is the most expensive network and most businesses should expect to pay $3 dollars and upwards.
  • The most expensive keywords in Google Ads and Bing Ads cost $100 or more per click. These are generally highly competitive keywords in industries such as plumbing.
